Big Worlds in Small Packages: Writing Science Fiction in Short Form
Science fiction is a broad and ever-evolving genre where the possibilities of an imagined world can seem almost limitless.Yet, some of the most successful and thought-provoking works of science fiction have engaged readers in the short form, providing them brief glimpses into expansive worlds.
Perhaps you have thought of providing readers a glimpse into a world you’ve created—if so, this is the workshop for you. During this workshop, we will read Octavia E. Butler, Jeff VanderMeer, Stephen Graham Jones, Joanna Russ, William Gibson, and other award-winning science fiction writers.
Workshop attendees will draft, workshop, and leave the class with one science fiction short story of 10 to 15 pages. It is the goal of this class to provide you with readings, craft discussions, and writing tools to help grow your confidence in writing science fiction, while also providing clear steps towards how you can publish your writing for others to read and enjoy.

Second AD with Jordan Wilson
SECOND ASSISTANT DIRECTOR with Jordan Wilson
A Second Assistant Director (Second AD) course will cover the essential duties of supporting the First AD in managing the logistics and paperwork of a film production. Participants will learn how to create and distribute call sheets, manage talent scheduling, and coordinate with various departments to ensure a smooth production flow. The course will also focus on developing the skills needed for setting up and managing the base camp, including talent check-in and handling daily production reports. Additionally, students will gain practical skills in communication, scheduling adjustments, and troubleshooting on-set challenges.
This course may be offered virtually via Zoom. When registering, students will select in-person or virtual attendance. A Zoom link will be sent prior to the course date.

Foundations of Funny
Wednesdays, October 1, 8, 15, 22, 29, and November 5, 2025

In this class we will learn how to craft and deliver stand-up comedy material, including premises, punchlines and personas.
The course will include:
watching and analyzing standup comedy,
learning how to generate bits,
and writing and polishing jokes.
We will also practice delivering what we write for an audience. This workshop will include feedback from instructor and peers through writing assignments you will come and deliver to class each week.
By the end of the course you will have generated 5 minutes of original material. The class will culminate in a final performance in front of an audience should you choose to participate in the show.

Intro to Film Editing

In this post-production focused workshop, students will receive an introduction to the role of the “editor” within a narrative film framework.
Throughout the course, students will learn foundational editing tools and concepts - from project creation and organization to generating a final edited sample of their work - using Adobe Premiere Pro software.
With footage provided in class, all students will get a hands-on opportunity to cut their own version of a scripted scene. By the end of the course, students will have gained a better understanding of the editing process and terminology that will prepare them for an apprentice level role on future collaborative projects.

Directing on a Budget
This course introduces the techniques of digital video and audio production, including basic terminology and the operation of cameras, lenses, lighting, audio recording, and digital editing equipment.
Through lectures, screenings, and hands-on exercises, we will explore the relevant production aesthetics and practices of digital filmmaking.
Students shall be able to apply knowledge gained from class into filmmaking, television, podcasts, and marketing and learn how to create their projects economically.
COURSE GOALS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES:
After taking this course, students shall demonstrate a firm grasp and understanding of:
The basic technical skills and fundamentals involved in digital video and audio
The overall creative process, including pre-production, production and post-production
Pre-Production paperwork including shot lists, overheads and call sheets
Aesthetic choices that impact composition, style, genre, and production design
Proper screenplay format, character development, goal cycles, act structure, and writing scripts for the short film format
Editing and the use of non-linear editing software
Critical assessment and the ability to evaluate the work of themselves and their peers from an analytical perspective

This workshop will cover what popular fiction is and why readers want it.
Attendees will learn the history of storytelling and how when written affectively it will engage readers page after page and result in work that sells.
They will learn how to write like a reader and read like a writer.
They will study the art of creating good characters, plot and pacing.
And they will learn about the different popular genres and why they are popular.
By the end of the workshop they will submit a 10-15 page first chapter and a summary book description for peer-critique and instructor critique.
Featuring Instructor: Lauren Smith

First AD with Jordan Wilson
FIRST ASSISTANT DIRECTOR with Jordan Wilson
The First Assistant Director (First AD) course covers the responsibilities of managing a film set, including breaking down scripts, creating shooting schedules, and coordinating daily operations to keep production on track. Participants will learn how to communicate effectively with the director, department heads, and crew to ensure a smooth workflow. The course will also focus on safety protocols and risk management, emphasizing the AD’s role in maintaining a safe and efficient set environment. Students will gain hands-on experience with call sheets, on-set logistics, and problem-solving under pressure.
If students have Movie Magic Scheduling software, this course may be offered virtually via Zoom. When registering, students will select in-person or virtual attendance. A Zoom link will be sent prior to the course date.

48 Hour Film Project (OKC) Awards Ceremony
At the city awards event, the winning films—as determined by local judges—are announced. More than a dozen awards are given—from Best Acting to Best Directing to the top prize: Best Film.
Filmapalooza and Cannes
What happens after the local 48? The top films earn more exposure. The Best Film in each city screens at our annual international film festival—Filmapalooza. This fest features screenings, workshops and parties and is attended by filmmakers from around the world. At the Awards Ceremony we announce the Grand Champion of the Year!
